Simple ways to make the most of your lunch break

Tips for making the most of your lunch breaks

Helen Abbott, Finance Coordinator, Fabric

A daily conversation will occur when it comes to what everyone is having for lunch. So this got me thinking, why not write a blog about it!

Maintain a work-life balance

Using your lunch hour for yourself is an important part of the working day. Not only can you refresh your mind, but you can refocus your mindset for the afternoon. We encourage our staff to get out of the office at lunchtime, whether that is just getting some fresh air or having a walk at a local park. Whether you read a book, play a game, book your next holiday or catch up with an old friend, there is always something you can do to fill your lunch hour.

Eating at your desk might appear to be the easiest option. Let’s face it – we’ve pretty much all been there. In some cases, you may even have skipped lunch altogether! But there are so many benefits to eating away from your desk that prove just how valuable that lunch break can be.

What are the benefits of eating away from your desk?

  • Chance to get away from your work and take a break
  • Allows your brain to recuperate/relax your mind
  • Socialise with other colleagues who you may not see on a day to day basis, or meet up with some friends
  • Stretch your legs, go for a walk, work out. Find out how we encourage employees to exercise in the workplace.
  • Get a change of scenery and return to your desk with a renewed and clear focus
  • Why not run some errands? I’m lucky enough to work close to home, so can nip back and get a few chores done. Check things off your to-do list if you can!
  • Even a 15-20 minute break is proven to help with concentration and energy levels, and this can only be beneficial.

Working at Desk

So, what’s wrong with eating your lunch at your desk?

Eating your lunch while working can result in mindlessness. This is where you are not paying attention to how much and the quality of what is being consumed. It’s easy to snack on unhealthy treats because they’re quick and easy. We are all guilty of it!

1. Physical effects

Sitting at your desk for a long time can encourage poor posture and talk about demotivation! It doesn’t give you the chance to recharge mentally, leaving you stressed, tired and unproductive.

2. Hygiene

Desks and keyboards can often be home to a high level of bacteria – think hygiene. Your desk working space may have up to 400 times more bacteria than a toilet seat – what a grim thought! Office odour! Nobody likes to walk into a smelly office.
