SharePoint Vs File Server
One big debate in the technology industry is which is better, SharePoint or a File Server.

So, how about a trusty File Server?
A file server is the original method of the two technologies and has been used by businesses for many years.
There are several pros of having an onsite file server in comparison to a cloud alternative. Advantages include being able to handle your backup physically, keeping data in-house, having no third-party access and being relatively cost-effective to small companies.
Having a physical backup comes with the risk of being damaged or lost. Loss of data can be disastrous in the case of a failure on the server. It can damage your backup drive, and any data could potentially be lost forever. Access to the server can only be internal unless used through a VPN, which may slow your internet down.
But what is SharePoint?
SharePoint is a more reliable cloud base method of storing data. SharePoint is accessible from anywhere using credentials and MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) which creates a secure yet easily accessible system.
SharePoint is highly customisable. It can be edited to best suit a business’s needs. Save direct from apps such as Microsoft Excel and Word on to your SharePoint platform.
Security is also improved with SharePoint as there is the ability to set permissions easily and quickly based on Office 365 accounts. Employee training may be required as the system is complicated to get to use too. Once users overcome the training hurdle, the software can be very efficient and time-saving. The cost also needs to be considered; every user who requires access to the platform will need a license starting at around £5 per month.
SharePoint is a fast-growing platform which is gaining new features all the time. Is SharePoint the future for document management and storage?
