What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is the UK government-backed scheme designed to protect organisations of all sizes and types from the full range of cyber threats. It is devised and supported by the nation’s leading data security specialists: the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

Cyber security and threats are one of the biggest worries for businesses – 39% of small businesses reported IT security breaches in the past 12 months, rising to 65% of medium-sized firms. Any breach can lead to severe financial losses through business disruption or fines for failing to meet regulatory standards. The average cost of a security breach to an individual business is £13,400.

The Cyber Essentials certification sets out five basic precautions that can combine to protect your business against the most frequently experienced types of cyber attack. The Fabric team will work with your team to put the necessary systems and documentation in place, before getting your accreditation from an independent accreditor.

The five pillars of Cyber Essentials – what’s involved

Cyber Essentials certification can be achieved by putting the following technical controls in place:

1. Implement a firewall

Fabric can help you to configure and use a firewall to protect all your devices, especially any that connect to public Wi-Fi networks, or untrustworthy ones such as home broadband. A firewall is defined as a buffer between your network and the internet, allowing incoming traffic to be analysed for threats before being allowed through.

2. Configure the most secure settings for devices and software

Devices and software often start out with the most open configurations possible to encourage connectivity. Our IT experts can review your users’ admin and access rights, ensuring the highest security is used. We’ll also ensure every device has safe, properly implemented passwords, PINs and other forms of advanced ID such as fingerprint detection and two-factor authentication.

3. Control and limit access to your services and data

This ensures that staff accounts, software, online services and connected devices can only be accessed and used by the people who really need them to do their job. Also that most people only have standard user accounts, so that extra permissions and administrative privileges can be carefully monitored and controlled. It also requires software installations to be limited to approved sources.

4. Protect against malware, viruses and ransomware

Malware is malicious software and ransomware, which makes your data or system unusable until a payment is made. Viruses infect software and can then be passed from device to device and can remain undetected for long periods without the right measures. Fabric can help to implement anti-malware software and train your staff to detect viruses before they become a problem.

5. Patch management to keeping software and devices up to date

‘Patching’ means making sure that all devices and applications are supported by their manufacturer with regular security updates, and that those updates are installed promptly. This also means replacing software as soon as it stops being supported with updates. Fabric can assess your IT infrastructure and pinpoint areas of weakness, where updates are not running on the latest version.

Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus?

There are two levels of certification within the scheme:

Cyber Essentials

This basic level of the Cyber Essentials certification protects against a wide variety of the most frequently experienced cyber-attacks. Having Cyber Essentials in place means you have the vital technical measures working and are protected against most common threats.

Cyber Essentials Plus

Cyber Essentials Plus includes all the standards and measures required for Cyber Essentials certification, but goes further — adding an independent, hands-on technical assessment and scan for vulnerabilities. Higher security environments, or businesses with confidential customer data, such as legal or financial businesses, should consider the Cyber Essentials Plus level.
