When should you replace your computer?

Do you think I need to replace my computer???

In my job as a systems engineer, a question I am regularly asked is, ‘do you think I need to replace my computer’. The simple way to answer this is by considering the following questions.

1. Is my device appropriate for the way I work?

A great example of this is if you work away from the office frequently. Workers are often chained down to a bulky desktop despite being split between multiple locations. If this describes you then maybe it’s worth looking into getting a laptop, docking station and screen. Working this way allows you to enjoy the practicalities of the ‘full fat’ desktop experience but also enjoy the mobility that can move from location to location. With computer mobility on the rise, users are empowered more than ever; now may be the best time to consider an upgrade.

2. Does your computer cause delays in your work?

Sometimes just waiting 10 seconds here and there for apps to switch or that new email to open can very quickly add up. In the competitive business world, this can lose you money. It may be worth considering if your computer is dragging you back as a worker and slowing your productivity. Computers have always been tools to allow us to do more. If your computer is causing you to do less, then it may be time to look at replacing it.

3. Are you up to date?

If you purchased your computer many years ago, it may still be servicing your needs but could be hampering your security. Security isn’t an exciting topic for most; in fact, its something that almost resented by many. It is, however, a necessary evil in the world of IT. Computer security is a big concern in this day and age but its quite easy to keep on track by just keeping up to date. If your old kit is unable to be updated and patched due to its age, then you are almost certainly putting yourself at risk and should maybe consider new hardware.
