How Renault Sport Formula One uses Dynamics 365 to make rapid changes for an even faster race car

Formula 1 presents the pinnacle of manufacturing, organisation, strategy and individual talent in racing. When races are won based on fractions of a second, there is no space for a team to make mistakes and the processes they follow in the development, production and testing of their cars must be as close to optimal as possible.
Running a large team of over 700 employees and a budget of $190 million means any percentage of improvements that can be made result in considerable differences in terms of the final product.

So how do Renault accomplish this, what technologies do they use from the Dynamics suite and how can we replicate their success?
Dynamics 365 for Operations streamlines business processes, allowing decisions to be made quickly based on intelligent data and analysis. This arm of the Dynamics suite focuses on managing core business processes involved from supply chain, manufacturer, retail, and finance, giving a holistic view across an entire organisation’s health and productivity.
Data can be captured within the Dynamics platform or gathered from other business systems or database through integration. Collating this data from all required sources into one central system allows intelligent insights to be made quickly and with all the facts in mind. Predictive analytics and business intelligence can be built upon this data source, highlighting peaks or treads and even suggesting action to guide and empower your employees.

One example is how Renault approaches their race predictions, looking at how their car will perform in the current race is a nightmare in data overload. Data to be considered includes, but by no means is limited to – track temperature, wear on tires, grid position, the position of other drivers, wind conditions, ambient temperature, car health, driver performance, driver track preference and so on. Collating as much of this data as possible, they can use Dynamics and Azure Machine Learning to predict with accuracy what the team can expect and target for that weekend. Producing a pre-configured report automatically that the team can work through.
By embracing similar principles to Renault of centralising data, streamlining the process and accurately predicting future events any organisation can expect to make very real improvements to their productivity and performance.
